Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters Review - Watch After A Long Time

I just watched out  "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" after a long time and I have to say, it was a truly powerful and thought-provoking film. The movie tells the story of the life and work of Japanese author and playwright Yukio Mishima, and is divided into four chapters, each of which is based on one of his novels.

The film is a fascinating exploration of Mishima's life, his writing, and his political and personal beliefs. The director, Paul Schrader, did an excellent job of weaving together the different elements of Mishima's life into a cohesive narrative.

One of the things that stood out to me most about this film was the acting. Ken Ogata, who plays Mishima, gives an absolutely incredible performance. He really captures the complexity and contradictions of Mishima's character, and I found myself completely engrossed in his portrayal.

The film also features some incredible animation, which adds an extra layer of depth and beauty to the story. The animation sequences are used to illustrate some of the more fantastical elements of Mishima's novels, and they really add to the overall atmosphere of the film.

The score by Philip Glass was also amazing, it was able to perfectly capture the emotions of the film.

Overall, "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" is a truly outstanding film. It is thought-provoking, beautifully shot, and expertly acted. If you're a fan of biographical dramas, or if you're just looking for a thought-provoking film, then I would highly recommend checking this one out.

In addition to the strong performances and visually stunning animation, the film also manages to delve deep into the mind of Mishima, providing a glimpse into his motivations and beliefs. The film doesn't shy away from depicting the darker aspects of his personality and his ideologies, but it also doesn't shy away from showing the beauty and the art that he created.

I was particularly struck by the way the film portrays Mishima's obsession with beauty, and his desire to create a perfect, idealized form of art. The film illustrates this through the use of stark contrasts between the animation and the live-action sequences, as well as through the way the film is shot and edited.

One of the things that makes this film so powerful is the way it manages to capture the sense of unease and tension that was present in Mishima's life. The film's pacing is slow and deliberate, and it creates a sense of unease that is both unsettling and captivating.

The film is not a traditional biographical film, it's not just a simple retelling of Mishima's life, but an artistic interpretation of his novels and life, that creates a unique and powerful experience.

Overall, "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" is a film that is not to be missed. It's a thought-provoking, beautifully shot, and expertly acted film that manages to capture the complexity of Mishima's life and work in a way that is both powerful and deeply moving. Highly recommended!
